Show OBJECT LESSON FOR II YORK ill IN POLICE COURT William Jones, a 21-year-old youth, was given an object lesson this morning morn-ing in the municipal court which, ho stated, hp always will remember Ho Is an orphan and was arrested yesterday yes-terday eenlng by Patrolman Blackburn Black-burn on the charge of .drunkenness He pleaded guilty and, after telling his storj , w as instructed by the Judge, to sit down and listen to the experiences experi-ences of his fellow offenders, fourteen four-teen of whom were on the "mourners" "mourn-ers" bench They were W Velasco, Peter Conner. Con-ner. Joe Mlnchast, George Ferguson Tred Barrett Mike MeCormlek Joha Eddy, John Johnson. Leonard Brown, James L Smith, Walter McLaughlin, Frank Hughes and Barney Armstrong. With the exception of Johnson, who is also only 21 years old, i heir stories sto-ries were of opportunities lost on account ac-count of cultivating the liquor habit In their outh. and they had arrived at ages ranging from 29 to 67 years With but one exception. John Eddy, they stated that they had spent hundreds hun-dreds of dollars for liquor with no thought of the future, and at the present pres-ent were almost "down and out." Velasco, Conner, Minchast. Barrett, McCormick and Eddy were arrested on charges of drunkenness and. after uillnp their stories, were given suspended sus-pended sentences. Ferguson was ordered into the charge of the city physician for treatment on account of nervousness brought on by a protract-ad protract-ad spree. Johnson and Brown were arrested Sunday night, and, after being given B good lecture, promised to keep on their good behavior In the future and were given 80-day suspended st-nten oe8 McLaughlin. Hughes ami Smith were arrested on Sunday evening for diaturhing the peace They were given a three-day sentence each, with Ian allowance for the two days already al-ready served. Armstrong was en- Itenced to serve five days in jail, after af-ter pleading gu'lty to a charge of i mendicancy The arresting officer Stated that Armstrong had abused a I pedestrian w ho refused his requeBl for money. |
