Four telephone operators at the Hyland exchange are suffering fmm severe burns as a result re-sult of mistaking some bottles of solution so-lution of corrosive sublimate for wood alcohol. The young women had been accustomed to use wood alcohol in i cleaning the connections on their switchboards, and thlnkin., the mercury mer-cury poison was wood alcohol they poured it out on a cheese cloth. Four of the five girls a' the night exchange picked up a piece of the cheese doth at almost the same point. Instantly the poison inflicted painful and serious burns. Miss Anna Hansen, Han-sen, 850 South Fourth East street, assistant as-sistant chief operator, was severely burned on both hands Miss Myrtle I Marks, 12.'.:: East First South, chief I operator at the exchange, and Miss Muriel De Witt. 162 South Eighth East and Miss Martha Porter 905 South Second West, were also painfully burned Dr. .Joseph S. Richards dressed the burns and said that there would probably prob-ably be no permanent injuries though it will be some time before they are able to return to work. |
