Show oo PROHIBITIONISTS ARE MING Secretary Daniels Order, Barring Bar-ring Alcoholic Liquors From Navy, Considered Temperance Tem-perance Victory. Washington, D. C, April 6 Secretary Secre-tary Daniels' order barring the use of alcoholic liquors in the navy, effective after July 1, next, was generally discussed dis-cussed In naval and other circles nore today. The order, one of the most sweeping ever promulgated by the navy, department, not only abolishes the traditional "wine mess" of the officers, of-ficers, but will abolish all liquors from ship and store stations of tho navy. Surgeon General Bralsted recommended recom-mended it after an exhaustive investigation inves-tigation Into the problem. While declining to discuss for publl cation the effect of tho order, naval officers nivately expressed the belief that it may fail of its purpose to pro-vent pro-vent or decrease drunkenness within the navy. In effect, the order does not more than abolish the wine mess, No distilled spirits are sold in the wine mess, only wines and beer. Offi cers contend It Is absurd to suppose that men ever become drunkards on beer or champagne. They express the opinion that the order will trespass tres-pass their personal liberty and prevent pre-vent their affording visitors from foreign for-eign navies the wines which they are accustomed to have on their own vessels. The order wns hailed with Joy here today by the Prohibition forces, who declare It will have a great Influence in the furtherance of the temperance cause. |
