Show JOHNSON WDB ALASKA DOG RACE Nome, Alaska, April 17 John Johnson, holder of the record for the 112-milo All-Alaska sweepstake dog team race, became tho winner in 1011 -Alaska classic, when he drove his eighteen Siberian -wolves Into Nome at three minutes after G o'clock tonight, to-night, having covered the -112 miles over the snow trail from Nome to Candlo and return in SI hours and 3 minutes. A. A. (Scotty) Allan, driver dri-ver of the Allan-Darling team of IS malamutes, Is still on the trail, but will finish second. Fred Ayor with his team of 14 foxhounds will finish third. Crowd Meets Winner. "When Johnson loft Solomon, 32 miles from tho goal, shortly" after noon, notice was posted that ho would arrive at 0 o'clock and every man and woman and child in the camp gathered gath-ered to welcome the winner. When his team appeared over the snow, with every dog In harness and showing little lit-tle effect of the long drive through a blizzard and below zero weather, tho crowd went wlldl Johnson's time was seven hours slower than the record set by himself In 1910 when he drove the Siberians over the course in 74 hours, 11 minutes min-utes and 20 seconds. The racers were handicapped this year by stormy wenther. The cold virtually put Allan and Ayer out of the running, the teams of both drivers becoming lame from frost-nipped feet. |
