Show crop estimating board cast reflection apoi the conduct of slycke and bssie new figures of acreage washington july 26 assistant secretary hays today made the following report to secretary wilson on the cotton planted in 1905 as compared with that planted jn 1804 the crop estimating board of the department of agriculture has considered the report issued by the bureau of statistics on june fid relative to the acreage planted in cotton in the southern states in as compared with that planted in 1904 and has concluded first that a new estimate should be made on acreage planted and that the figures in mr hydes bands when making his estimate should be used as the basis second that mr auyde with mr hays at his elbow prompting him imade the estimate lower than the facts at his hand from the reports from the seven classes of reporters employed bi tha bureau warranted third the board finds upon carp ful consideration of the reports oi all classes of correspondents and agents that the acreage planted in dotton abs tbs year including the entire season should have been estimated at sibl iper cent of that planted last year to a reduction in planted acreage as compared with last year of ha per cent instead of or acres the estimate of tho acreage planted this year being acres the estimated percentage of the decrease in each of the cotton growing states Is as follows virginia 18 north carolina 16 south carolina 14 georgia 14 florida 12 alabama 11 mississippi 16 louisiana 16 texas 16 arkansas 19 tennessee Tenn esiee 13 missouri 15 oklahoma 15 indiana 11 the averages were made for each by each of the four members of the board with comparatively email disagreements which harmonized almost wholly by averaging and the above results are fully agreed to by each and every member of the board |
