Show POLICE CLASH AT DELMAR RACE TRACK st louis mo july 24 about policemen under command ot captain mcnamee acting upon orders from chief of police kiely who in turn received instructions from governor folk forced delmar race track today toabe that there was no violation ot tha anti pool selling law and to arrest any person actually seen making bets no arrests were made with ft squad ot thirty officers captain ap eared at the race track entrance at tha alma of the first race and demanded admittance this was not granted and his men marched in meeting with no resistance fearing that an attempt might bo made to resist the officers if arrests were to be made captain monakea ordered a second squad from the reserves and the squad had just arrived athen constable lentz with a posse and a warrant charging trespass and destruction truc tion of property endeavored to ar rest captain mcnamee chiat kiely had ordered that none of the officers should submit to arrest and captain mcnamee refused to consider the endeavors of constable lentz to take him into custody his own men surrounding him n protection until lentz resisted desisted des isted the races were run on schedule before an interested crowd of citizens and police and when the last race had finished everybody departed |
