Show affia AIL PAY ON FOOTHILLS SOUTH EAST OF CITY favorable course of windalene Win dAlone prevents very great damage to property from tuesdays standard another brush fire raged all ot acs tn day in the foothills southeast ot bt city and last night and only the course of the wind kept the flames from doing much damage to property in that district it is claimed that the flames were sorted by a party of people who had gone to enjoy a days outing in water falls canyon A fire was built which soon ignited the dry grass and it was only a short time until the flames had assumed rather earlous proportions from the mouth of the canyon the flames spread in both directions the more dangerous element traveling to avd the south the oak brush which ordinarily appears too green to burn seemed to act as fuel for the flames which licked them up like tinder by three in the afternoon the fire covered an area of about one mile square and was spreading unchecked except by the wind which blew from the southwest and kept the fire pretty well confined to the mountains sheriff J W bailey drove to the acena early in the afternoon in order to arrange tor the handling of the alre in case it became dangerous a any point the sheriff reported that the only place it was likely to assilie any serious proportions was at the horn property where the oak brush grew close to the fence inside ot which was a hay stack the house and out buildings were only a short dl from the hay stack and it was feared that it the alre con linued to eat its way in that direction it would be but a short time until the hay stack house and all else would be reduced to ashes being connected with the city by telephone it was arranged that in case the alre grew at all dangerous a call would be phoned in for the city alre this action however had not become nei cessare up to a late hour at which time the flames were still hugging the mountain side |
