Show THE ST louies yesterday ano leaders of the republican party of the state of california passed through ogden en route to st louis they were samuel and M H deyoung the editor of this paper had an interview with the gentlemen for a few minutes and we received more hope from them en the silver question than we bad entertained for a long time M H DeYoun gis confident that the republicans will nominate mckinley and adopt a free coinage platform which will embrace the free coinage 0 the american product sir ia sure that the grand old republican party will be equal to the occasion and will satisfy the silver men of the west that said mr is saying a good deal so it is to satisfy the silver men may not be such a great task in the rocky mountains but at st louis the california gentlemen may find that nothing but independent action at 16 to 1 rill satisfy the heroic teller and bis band nothing would suit THE STANDARD better than to support the grand old party in the coming campaign we would gladly stretch a point or two to be able to do that but we cannot straddle ahe silver question we are willing to give up alt the other principles of republicanism to secure the free coinage of silver but we cannot surrender that for all the other principles of all the political parties combined THE democratic the democrats of utah can feel easy i and confident that the delegates elected yesterday at the state convention will represent the Dim of at the chicago convention with grace and dig fety and above all will represent the people of this state properly on the eil ver question that is more than we can eay for the full republican delegation if the chicago convention adopts a straddle on the money question the utah delegates at least will be no party to the straddle for every one ot them will walk ut of the convention before submitting to anything less than the free coinage of silver at 16 to 1 by the united states alone and at once the delegates elected represent all sections and interests inte of our state even factions ot the part yare the tuscarora have been tha of badge powers the miners are represented by bra and david ayans the great north i by moses 1 hatcher the south by samuel R thurman and salt lake city and utah at large by joseph rawlins weber county was doubly honored by I 1 baving accorded to the honorable david evans the first chairmanship ot the convention and later by the election of the same gentleman as a delegate to the national convention it the western states are represented as ably as utah iia the chicago convention then there meed be no fear ol 01 alie gold bugs playing any tricks on the unsuspecting silver ites IT WAS awful it was a burning shame for the supreme court to decide that R H wripple 13 not the city attorney of ogden it was very unfair to mr whipple to prevent him from drawing mr H H hendersons salary how dare the supreme court take upon itself the right to eay that should not support BH wripple the remainder of bia natural life under ordinary circumstances the court may be right but when it rubs up against boas wripple it surely errs when it proclaims that the laws ol 01 the state and this nation are binding with equal force upon boss whipple the earns as on other people we will explain the case to the public and let them judge between the great and only R H wripple and the court mr wripple bails from dear ou iowa before the dust from the hawkeye detate was shaken from off his shoes he was an applicant for political honors and bo soon received tho appointment of city attorney for ogden it was supposed by some that mr whipple wanted the office for the good he could do the people but the regularity with which he drew his salary would indicate otherwise for two fat years mr bis salary in the long years gono by tte city attorneys have always stepp edl aside when their terms had expired and their successors appointed but not BO with he conceived tho idea that because be belli the office when utah became a stats it required a special act 0 the legislature to legislate him out of office the newly elected mayor bow ever on looking up the law found that be waa entitled to appoint hi own legal advisor and that two years VM the limit ct in ogden hence he promptly appointed hyrum henderson city attorney boss wripple objected to this and instituted a suit to compel the city to pay salary to whipple the district court decided that the law was against mr wripple that lie must step aside he however conceived the idea that because bis name was whipple the law did not include him and he promptly appealed to the supreme court of the state and now that body has decided that the law applies with equal force to all whipple included there are only two to be done now either whipple must abide by the decision and go without the salary or hy henderson will have to open bis generous heart and let hia predecessor in office draw the salary while he does the work TUB they are already at work the senator brown mckinley papers of the state have started the attack on senator frank J cannon they claim he has forsaken the party they claim he voted against silver and that brown voted for dilver they are twisting and twirling the actions of the two senators in congress to each an extent that it requires a contortionist to keep track of the many that are presented in the great attempts te make senator brown appear a friend to utah and senator cannon a gold bug the salt lake argus has been one of frank cannons strongest supporters in the past but now it under the of friendship crielly stabs the senator in the back we can not account for the action of the argus unless gold bug boodle has made its appearance the argus actually supports senator brown for reelection that indicates that a very large sized sack was required to make the argus support both brown and a silver straddle in order to give the public an idea how the papers are starting in on senator cannon we herewith publish an editorial from last evenings argus w THE SPAT the family spat between senators brown and canagon n the senate demonstrates by negation how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity it also reminds us ot what every email boy knows that political combinations are ephemeral it Is not half a year since senators I 1 were elected by a combination of their respect he followers and here they are like political enemies over the beat the common desire ol 01 both and of all their conati tu erts the dispute between senators revives the merits of a must interesting which has one of the topics of the day in the late winter and early namely the republican senators against he revenue bill reported to the senate by the finance com mutee senator cannon points with pride to the endorsement indorsement Indor received by the five senators tn the practically unanimous election of an of them to the national convention ven tion from the standpoint of mere success he is justified in sounding his pecan of triumph bat it is sale to say that three fourths of the people who acquire sore throats by yelling approval of the five senators dont know what they are whooping it up for the five oro did not vote against the consideration otibe dingier bill which as senator carter conclusively clu demonstrated was not a kepul alcan measure but against the consideration of a free silver substitute for that bill the substitution having been made in the committee which has a silver majority this has all been explained a of times yet senator cannon attempts by high sounding devaluation to fool people into believing that he is a better silver man ihan those republicans who vote foe every time they have a chance but decline to accept the theory that it is the duty of a political tactician to mil his head against every stone wall within reach benator cannon may sneer at senator browns fences but he wants to be sure that his own are bull of material that will last for three yeara the mere kicker in politics seldom lasts long and still less often accomplishes anything beneficial results are always accomplished through regular party channels the argus says the five se natora voted against the silver substitute tor the dingley bill the algua knows it uttered a falsehood when it made the statement the congressional record which we have before ua at this writing shows that the motion voted upon was to take up the house tariff bill and not the substitute offered by the a ivor men this misrepresentation by the argus is the strongest argument in favor ot the the theory that it has sold out body and soul to the gold bug cause on reading the argus editorial one is almost demb bounded at the awful misrepresentation deception and trickery in it presented the people should frown with contempt on such methods let ua have at least the truth BO the people can honestly judge for themselves 80 far as the reference is made to senator cannons fences in utah we wish to say that the silver forces will take care of those fences if senator cannon maintains the position bo now occupies if the republicans refuse an absolute free coinage platform then senator cannons present position will demand thit he walk out of the convention it he docs that there ie not a man in utah who can ever hope to run for an office against senator can non the silver element will return him to the united states senate so long as his life may last if bo remains true to the people it remains to be seen if senator cannon hag the courage of bis convictions it requires a great big brainy man to read a speech of defiance to a great national convention la senator cannon each a man let us wait and see THE nitice ot walea is a greater man than ever his horse persimmon wins the english derby TUB TEW york sun is persistent in accusing grover cleveland in hia aspirations for a third term with the downfall of sound money democracy coequal co equal with john sherman has cleveland been in foi etine the gold standard upon the country and no amount of whining on the part of the sun can bedim the glories of grover ia the eyes of he gold bugs of wall street SENATOR waa addressing the senate last monday when in the conrao of his speech he bad occasion to refer to the uprising of the people in behalf of silver and the untruthful neB 0 the press of this country senator stewart is publisher of the silver knight and senator chandler hastened to inquire 1 I suppose the senator excepts in bis denunciation of the public press a mendacious publication in this city called the silver knight stewart quick at repartee said always excepting that it takes an exception to prove the rule chandler concluded by admitting that he read the silver knight and found a great deal of truth in it senator stewart had much the best ot the colloquy wats IT for several days THE has received communications concerning the appointment of registrars for this county we have ignored them all because the attacks were mainly on the county commissioners and knowing they are innocent and powerless in the matter we declined to allow the attacks to be published but yesterday a very strong protest was handed in against tho appointment of boss son as registrar for the fourth ward the protest assails F J B H chippe and the county court in severe terms we have promised to review the mat ter and have thus satisfied all concerned the law passed by the last legislature provides that the chairman and secretary of the party that cast the highest vote for governor in each precinct at the preceding election shall present three names to the county commissioners from which they select one name for registrar of the precinct it BO happens that F J is the chairman of the republican party of the fourth ward and it appears that he consulted with boas whipple at any rate the names submitted for the fourth ward were clarence and young fred whip ale and a young lady whose name is not at band the county court selected whipple believing of the three he was the best qualified the question now arises did the chairman androes and Boes whipple present three of the best men in the ward did they represent the republican party of the fourth ward when they submitted the names was it diee to select the names of their own family of coarse it is a nice practice to keep good things in the family at least that is the old man eaid the only question Is has the grand old party of abraham lincoln ia the fourth ward of ogden become so large that it embraces all of the two families named and no more TIIE CAnN IViL the spanish fork american is a bright weekly journal edited by W M white after reproducing the letter cent by wm glasmann to the
