Show FATAL ACCIDENT austin corbin of new york killed while driving horses shy throwing occupants of carriage down an embankment coachman also killed and others injured newport N H june 4 mr austin chibin the new york capitalist and railroad magnate and bis nephew corbin edgell with dr paul kunzier and coachman john stokes started on a fishing trip about 4 this afternoon on going out of the yard at the farm house the horse shied tipping over the open carriage throwing the occupants down an embankment about eight feet against a stone wall the family saw the accident from the plaza and hurried to their assistance with the farm help they found mr corbin conscious but I 1 terribly wounded his nephew and the doctor were also conscious ane coachman was unconscious and apparently hurt the worst of all they were carried to the bouse and doctors summoned mr corbina injuries ceru very serious a compound fracture ot the right leg above the knee a fearful scalp wound over four inches lung on the forehead cut through to the skull one on the right side ot the head three inches long and the hip and chin cut badly dr kunzier was thrown over the wall and sustained a broken arm and sprained ankle EO far as known and corbin edgell had his leg broken twice between the knee and ankle john stokes right ipg was breien between the knee and ankle and he also sustained a fractured skull stokes died from his injuries about 6 without regaining consciousness the cause of the horbes shying is said to be from the fact that the coachman was driving them tor the first time without blinds mr corbin died at this evening shortly aftel the arrival of dr cally from boston his son austin corbin jr arrived on a special train from boston but too late to see his father alive all the other members of the family with the exception of bis son in law mr george S algell El gell who id in the west were present when he breathed his last new york jano S austin corbin was born in newport N H july 11 1827 his father was a farmer who was many times elected to the legislature 0 new hampshire after receiving a moderate amount of schooling he taught s country school ue afterwards studied law with chief justice dishing of rhode island and finished the course at ahe harvard law school where he received his degree in 1813 he practiced while at home but in 1851 removed to davenport la where he remained until 1865 though successful aa a lawyer mr corbin did not practice long he became a partner in 1854 of the banking firm of macklom and corbin which was the only concern of the kind in davenport which did not suspend payment in the financial panic of 1857 corbin organized the first national bank which began business under the national currency act of 1803 the bank was successful and mr corbin was enabled in 1865 to come to new york with a considerable fortune here he founded the corbin banking company and RO after interest until he became one of the leading financiers of the country mccorbin Mr Corbin had a beautiful home on long island and another in new hampshire besides bis town houses his new hampshire property consisted of acres around newport all mountain and valley this last property is the greatest and best stocked game pre merveon ser veon the continent |
