Sensational developments devel-opments in the local aldormanic graft scandal occurred today when Prosecuting Prose-cuting Attornej Shepard announced that before night about twenty aldermen alder-men would be arrested on charges or conspiracy to defraud the city in connection con-nection with their official nosltlons The nine aldermen recently arrested an a similar charge also are Included among the 20 new arrests. Tt is said that arrests are to be based on entirely different evidence than that wfalch led to the arrest of nine aldormen, and the secretary of ' the common council committees who now aro at liberty on bail facing charges of receiving and conspiring to receive bribe money for conspiring conspir-ing to give the Wabash railroad city property for building purposes The next evidence is alleged to have been obtained by the prosecutor Investigating Investi-gating tho city administration for years back. The prosecutor said he has struck many now instances of graft but refused re-fused to say whether the evidence was obtained from confessions by Aldermen preiously arrested. The superintendent of police had sent out nearlv every detective on the force to arrest the aldermen and the prisoners were locked up at police po-lice headquarters. Fifteen arrests were made before noon Eight of tho aldermen also faco the original charge of bribery. Those newly arrested were required requir-ed to furnish $5,000 bonds and those formerly taken Into custody were released re-leased iipon furnishing surety to the amount of $2,000. |
