Show H wt" I ; GRADING FOR I A DOUBLE I TRACK H The contract for the construction of H I fifteen miles of second track on tho H Southern Pacific, which will connect H tho towns of Truckoe, Cal., and Reno, M Nev,, has heen awarded to tho Utah H i Construction company. This Is the H latest part of the construction of a H second track on the Harrlman lines M between Omaha and San Francisco. H Hundreds of men are employed . in M clearing away underbrush along this Hl i stretch of fifteen miles. Camps, ,mil- H Itary in appearance, line the track Hl i and few people traveling ov er the 1 line realize just what a stupendous H I job this fifteen mile stretch will bo. A. H. Christensen of the Utah Construction Con-struction companj says the Job will be finished by early wintor. A large part of the proposed double dou-ble tracking of the Southern Pacific has already been completed. Between Sacramento and Colfax the sccoud track is already In operation. Tho laying of the second track from Be-nicia Be-nicia to Sacramento, a distance of ilf-ty-elght miles, is completeU with the exception of eight miles botwoen Webster Web-ster and Washington This stretch of eight miles involves the raising of the roadbed across the Yolo basin and the rebuilding of approximately two miles of bridges. It will probably be completed about tho first of October and there will then be a double track the entire distance between Oaklnnd pier and Colfax Between the Oakland pier and Porta Por-ta Costa the second track has been In operation for some months. From tho pier to Richmond tho company is operating four tracks continuously. A Httlo more than twenty-five miles of second track has been laid nnd Is being operated on the Salt Lake division di-vision of the road west of tho Lucin cutoff. The laying of the second track over Nevada will not bo such a problem as has been the same ldnd of work in tho mountain districts. By the first of October there will be about 1122 miles of double track line In operation. The engineers in charge of the work have no fear but that it will be complete com-plete from San Francisco to Omaha by the time of the exposition |
