Show SCANDALOUS CONVENTION Roosevelt Sizes Up the Situation in Chicago Chicago, June 22. Colonel Roosovelt Rooso-velt at 12:40 Issued this statement: "A clear majority of the delegates honestly elected' to thiB conventlrm were chosen by tho people to nominate nomi-nate me. Under the direction, and with tho encouragement of Mr. Taft, the majority of the national committee, commit-tee, by the so-called 'steam roller' methods and with scandalous disregard disre-gard of overy principle of elementary honesty and decency, stole eighty or ninety delegates, putting In tho temporary tem-porary roll call a sufficient number of fraudulent delegates to defeat the legally expressed will of the people and to substltuto a dishonest for an honest maporlty. "Tho convention has not decided to purge the roll of tho fraudulent delegates dele-gates placed thereon by tho unit rule of the national convention and tho majority, which thus endorsed fraud, was made a majority only because it concluded tho fraudulent delegates themselves, who all sat as judges on one another's cases If these fraudulent fraudu-lent votes had not thus been cast and counted, the convention would have been purged of their presence. This action makes the convention in no proper senso any longer a Republican convention representing the real Republican Re-publican party. Therofore I hope tho men elected as Roosevelt delegates will now decline to vote on any matter mat-ter before tho convention. I do not release any delegato from his honorable honor-able obligation to vote for me, If he votes at all; but under the actual conditions I hopo that he will not vote at all "The convention, as now composed, has no claim to represent the voters of the Republican party. It represents nothing but successful fraud In overriding over-riding tho will of the rank and file of the party. Any man nominated by the convention as now constituted would be merely tho beneficiary of this successful suc-cessful fraud, It would be deeply discreditable dis-creditable to any man to accept the conventions nomination under these circumstances, and any man thus accepting ac-cepting it would have no claim to the support of any Republican on party grounds and would have forfeited the right to ask the support of any honest man of any party on moral grounds. (Signed) THEODORE ROPSEELT." Colonel Roosevelt about noon began meeting the delegates denied seats in the national convention. The delegates dele-gates Irora Alabama were admitted first. The conferences were expected to last several hours. The Roosevelt steam roller delegates dele-gates and their alternates, who were excluded from the convention, met Colonel Roosevelt In a body. The Colonel held a brief reception, Informed In-formed them that the plans for a new party were being pushed foiward rap-Idly rap-Idly and urged them to stand firm. It was his first Intention to meet them by state delegations, but they collected eo rapidly In the corridors near his office that It was decided to raarshall them nil Into the Roosevelt committee assembly hall at one time. co |
