Show 1 1 j Boost, of Course, But Have ( bfo;f I I'll a Reason for Your Boosting II ht-by I Down in Los Angeles I met a for-5 for-5 mer Ogdenite who had gone to Cali- fornia for his health, finally gone j into business down there, and as i most of them do, became converted. As I remembered him in Ogden, he i was never very enthusiastic over 3 anything, indeed he would have I been classed with the knockers if a I very severe test had been made. 3j But down in California he had be-i be-i come infected. He had become fill ed with the California spirit of boost. California was the greatest country on earth. The greatest business bus-iness opportunities. The country was simply teeming with opportunities opportun-ities to pick golden dollars, he said, , and advised me to come at once and grow rich. I I afterwards learned that he was j not doing remarkably well, indeed he was not doing quite so well as he did while living in Ogden. He was not looking any better physically, that I could see, but he had improved in one verv important particular: HE HAD GOTTEN RID OF THE GROUCH AND. HAD LEARNED TO BOOST. There may be a number of things which are not just right in Ogden. There are in every city. But the one thing that is most the trouble with Ogden, the thing that interferes most with her growth is that percentage per-centage of our population whom we call KNOCKERS. And let me make this observation about knockers. Invariably they are a class of people who have never 1 seen the outside of their native state. j They complain about the conditions here because they cannot know, by comparison, what a God-blessed country we have. You'll invariably find a knocker to be a man who has never done anything for the town and who is kicking because the town does not do something for him. A knocker is a person with a contagious conta-gious disease. If he associates with any number of people regularly (which is not likely to be the case) he will infect them with the same pessimism which has caused his own failure and the failure which he predicts for his town. Beware of the knocker. If you, yourself, are yet untainted with this loathsome disease, thank God for your light heart, and take care that you remain pure. So that is the only thing the matter mat-ter with Ogden -and that can be overcome. We are all going to become so enthusiastic, one of these days, over ,our good little town, that the knocker will get the virus of happiness happi-ness and of hope and of Boost into his veins "and the truth will make him free." Ogden is a good town, and she is going to grow better every day and every year beginning right now. Ogden has the big town virus in her veins and she is going to grow just as surely as the sun will arise again over those glorious mountains to the east, and she is going to continue to grow just as surely as the sun will continue to shine upon the water of that wonderful won-derful lake on the west. I know what you are thinking, Mr. Knocker; you are saying to yourself, "This is all talk this is groundless enthusiasm." But I deny the charge. My Optimism is the result of my own observations and reasoning. Incidentally Inci-dentally I might say that I have seen the United States from Florida to Canada and from New York to Cai-, ifornia, and I would rather live in Ogden than in any city I have ever seen. And why is Ogden V growth so sure? For some very natural reasons. rea-sons. First, because the beet raisers of the country tributary to Ogden will raise this year, EIGHTY-FIVE I THOUSAND TONS OF BEETS, ! and for this crop they will receive a ' little less than a half'million dollars money which will come to Ogden. The percentage of increase in bank clearings in' Ogden, according to the last report, WERE THE SEC-, UND LARGEST IN THE UNITED b FATES. Do you get that: re-' gardless of the size of the towns, or their location, or their reputed pros-1 perity Ogden's bank clearing beat i them all but one. Do you know that the pea crop, just harvested, is one of the greatest I in the country and that it put into circulation here ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-FIVE . THOU- SAND DOLLARS? ' Do you know that the canning factories fac-tories have contracted to give the I farmers of this vicinity TEN DOLLARS DOL-LARS a ton for all the tomatoes they can prdouce, and that the canners I have already sold every can, for . which they dare take an order? Do you know that this county is a great dairying center that the p quality of the dairy stock is getting ' j better every year producing more ' j and more butter and that there is a j hungry market ready with a good j price for every pound that we will j sell them? Do you know that there is not a ! better poultry country in the world j and that every year the demand for I Utah poultry and eggs is bringing money here that usually goes to oth- I er fields? Do you know that there are thou- j sands of acres of dry farms around ' us, which five years ago were barren l wastes and that these farms are 1 now producing a quality of wheat 'I for which there is an eager demand? 1 Do you know that the world has I just had a very little taste of Utah fruit and that the excellence of its flavor is going to create a demand 1 (Continued on Pago Sktcen ) C 'I Boost 9 of Course, But Have j 7r, "LlJ , I a Rssom for Yqut Boosting j S '' ou I (Continjcd From Page Eight. i 'which we cannot begin to fill even with our rapidly growing supply? Do you know that you can't get anywhere, without coming to Ogden? Og-den? Do you know that between now and nineteen fifteen the great international automobile highway will bring thousands of moneyed strangers to our town? The railroad travel will be tremendous. tre-mendous. Have you been down to the depot lately and seen the Luindreds of trains which daily come to Ogden? Do you know that one day Ogden will have the greatest inland resort in the world, out on the white beach at Promontory Point? Don't you know that it will not be long before the Ogden Canyon will attract a thousand tourists where it now attracts at-tracts one? Don't you know that right now houses for rent are scarce in Ogden? Have you been to the outskirts of the city in any direction and noticed no-ticed the hundreds of pretty little cottages? Have you stopped to realize that those homes are all being built, not by promotion companies, but by individuals in-dividuals who will live in them and are permanent residents of Ogden? Do you know that there is not a better school system in the world than the Ogden schools no better buildings, no better teaching materials? mate-rials? Do you know that a man of any denomination can come to Ogden and attend services in a church of his own denomination, and no matter mat-ter what the denomination, he need not be ashamed of the building in which he worships? sgaaaMMaaMpr BMM"wisaMSfii,M Do you know that the, great raluL I roads centering in Ogden are doiiS business to their greatest capaciM and that this means more and mol?? employment every year for Ogdea men? m You say that .Ogden's growth n slow, and I answer: We are glad is, because we know it to be sure. Nm i inocker, don't you know that it is distinct advantage to Ogden that her building is upon the sure rock oj genuine prosperity, instead of trig sandy foundation of inflated values We know whereof we speak; wM have had a taste of that spectacular growth known as Boom and the! blow nearly killed us, but in thel afterward hazy moments of deliriousl indecision we decided to live rath-f er than die and now we are gaining! strength upon the pure air and thel natural resources of our wonderful!! county, and we are going to continued this substantial growth, thank youiffl We have learned the lesson of stim-J ulated values and Never again! JM So Ogden is alright, Mr. KnockerM you have just got the wrong men-fl tal attitude, that's all. After you navel thought these things over a little! . while you are going to come over and! make application to join the tribes? known as BOOSTERS, and anytime! you come we are going to give youfj the glad hand of welcome for well need you, we need the good will oM every man, woman and child in (3gjT aen. There is no strength in dis3 cordsit in and let's smoke the pipe! , of peace. We will teach you our was 4 cry of "Greater Ogden, Gateway t$ 4 the West," and the first thing youl " know you'll be shouting it with gladlT ness and conviction and some of thejh prosperity that is finding its way tc? : Ogden, will find its way to you .
