Show STRIKE NOT LIKELY SMS DAVB KEITH Salt Lake, SepL 13. David "Keith, who has just returned to Salt Lako aftor an absenco of a month on the coast, Is of the belief that the differences differ-ences between the Harrlman lines and tholr shoi) employes will be amicably settled. .Mr. Keith said that the threatened threat-ened railroad strike was causing much apprehension on the coast and that every effort was being made to avert the strike. ' Mr. Keith spent much of the time, during his absence from Salt Lake, In Los Angeles. Ho also visited San Francisco and other coast cities, returning re-turning to Salt Lake from the Northwest North-west Monday night While in San Francisco, Mr. Keith called on E. E Calvin, vice-president and general manager of the Southern Pacific com pany, to learn what danger there was in the threatened railroad strike. Mr. Calvin gave it as his opinion that there would bo no strike. "Should the shopmen decide to strike," declared Mr Keith, "everyone "every-one would suffer, But the railroad and the strikers would be Injured and business would suffer almost irreparable irre-parable damage. If a strike comes, I think that the contest will be a bitter bit-ter one on both sides, and I certainly, hope that It may be avoided. The baneful bane-ful effect of a strike on business would be felt generally through the country and particularly In San Fran-cisco Fran-cisco Salt Lake, Omaha, Kansas City and Chicago. "Plowovcr, I think tho outlook for a peaceful settlement is a hopeful one The men have always been treated In an excellent manner by tho Harrlman Harrl-man system. Their wages have been good, and their relations with the railroad have been the best. My belief be-lief is that the wiser counsels will prevail and a satisfactory settlement willbo reached. "Business conditions appear to be Improving in all of tho coast towns. Los Angeles looked especially good. The business of that city appears to be constantly Improving, "and tho people peo-ple maintain that a largo number of people are moving to Los Angele3 from all parts of the country. Tn San Francisco the threatoaed railroad strike "was having Its effect on business. bus-iness. With tho settlement of that controversy, I look for a. marked improvement im-provement In San Francisco. Other coast cities wore bustling. Crops in tho Northwest are excellent. With the heavy crop yield and the genoral Improvement in business conditions the outlook for fall business Is excel lent." |
