Show H PROGRESSIVE EVERYWHERE. H The Progressive Republicans arc organizing everywhere. Their H - latest move is in Colorado. Colonel Isaac N. Stevens of Denver. m who has been one of the Republican war horses of that state, in an B interview in Salt Lake, says the Progressives will carry Colorado at H the next election. H "We arc trying to get the control of the politics of Colorado H away from the Denver bi-partisan machine," said Colonel Stevens M ( . "For some years the Democrats have been in control of the state 1 government, but we look to tho Progressive movement to bring the H estate back into the Republican party. Hl "A few days ago the Progressive Republicans of the state had H an enthusiastic banquet at Montrose. William Allan White was the H orator of the evening and was given a great reception. There were H Republicans from eyery part of the state at the gathering. Unani- B mous indorsement was given all of the progressive ideas. We are m going to have direct election of United States senators, a better di- 1 root primary law; we already have the initiative and referendum m and we are going to have the recall, the recall for the judges and all. m Some few at the banquet opposed the recall for judges, perhaps be- ' cause of the president's opposition to that feature of the recall, but H H we arc going to have it nevertheless. HJ fl "Unfortunately, we still have conventions for the selection of H 1 delegates to the national convention. Under the convention system H m it is possible that the delegates to the Republican national conven- H tion may not be progressive. Our candidate for president is, of H M course, LaFolIctte, who is the candidate of the Progressives cvery- H I , where, and Ave hope to be able to send a (LaFollettc delegation to H B the next Republican national convention. In any event, the Pro- B B gressives arc certain to nominate and elect the next state officers I of Colorado." B Utah, if it remains in the "Standpat" column, will be a lonely HJ state. From now on a "Standpat" senator or congressman will j- have less influence in congress than a Democrat had when Joe Can- K i non was "Czar" of the lower house and Aldrich pulled the wires to B his automatons in the upper chamber. Hi The day of the crafty, cunning politician with a "pull" with "the H interests" has passed and from now on men in public life must V stand responsive to no other interests than thosu of the people. That H I is why Progressive Republicanism will sweep Colorado, as it has B j other states, and hat is why it will win a victory in Utah or the Hf I state suffer a political eclipse. |
