American" tonnis players won tho right to meet the Australian holders of the Davis International challenge cup by capturing captur-ing tho final singles of the prelim-Jnary prelim-Jnary matches today on the turf courts of the West Side Tennis club. Both closing matches went through four fast sots, M. E. McLoughlin of California Cali-fornia disposing of C. P. Dixon, captain cap-tain of the British team, S-G, 3-0, 6-3, 6-2, while W. A. Lamed, the American title-holder, defeated A. H. Lowe, rated rat-ed as tho best singles man on tho British team, 6-3, 1-C, 7-5, 6-1. The results of the five competitions in which tho Americans and British challengers engaged give the Americans Ameri-cans four points for winning all singles, sin-gles, while the British team takes ono point for the victory in the doubles in which Beamish and Dixon defeated Bundy and Little. There was anxiety among the followers fol-lowers of the sport before the matcnes began, as the Britons had shown moro strength than had been expected. But tho Americans wero at their host and did more than was looked for. Both Lamed and McLoughlin, after Working Work-ing tlioir net games to the limit and winning tho first sets, stayed back in the courts. This allowed tho Britons Brit-ons to display their wonderful skill at driving and to outplay the Americans Ameri-cans for tho set Then Larned began his attack at tho not and McLoughlin followed suit and there the Americans won. The Britons could not hold them when they came up to the net In the last set Larned ran to a lead of five-love on games beforo he let up and Lowe got a game. McLoughlin smashed all around Dixon In his most spectacular style. As the latter attempted to como up tho American crossed tho ball at a speed that dofied a return. In tho last set he led Dixon 4-lovo beforo the Briton was successful in scoring a game It was a battle of speed at tho net against driving and steadiness and 'the former won with a good margin mar-gin to spare. |
