Show RUEF TO APPEAR AGAINSTSCHMITZ SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 7. The arrival ar-rival from the penitentiary of Abraham Abra-ham Ruef, former political leadofr, now serving a 14-year sentence for bribery, and a clash between attorneys attor-neys for Eugene Schmitz, former mayor, on trial for bribery, and Superior Su-perior Judge Lawler, heightened Interest In-terest today In the work of obtaining a Jury to try Schmitz. Ruef arrived hero late today and was greoted at the Ferry building by Fremont Older, editor of the San Francisco Bulletin, aud by Bert Schle-fer, Schle-fer, Ruef's attorney In the former trial. Older was one of the most prominent figures in tho graft prosecution, prose-cution, but is now advocating Ruef's release from tho penitentiary. Ruef's sister accompanied him across the bay. He was taken to the county Jail. The clash between lawyer and judge came when Attorney Fulrall formally moved that Judge Lawler debar himself him-self from proceeding with, the case, Inasmuch as the judge had let pass th five days provided by tho statute for the judge to qualify, setting forth that tho Judge was disqualified by reason f this. Judge Lawler said that ho never had heard of any affidavits of the character charac-ter In question, but Assistant District Dis-trict Attorney Berry said that the affidavits af-fidavits Lad been served on him. Judgo Lawler ruled that the statute had not been complied with and the case proceeded until noon when the venire was exhausted and adjournment adjourn-ment taken until tomorrow, when a new venire of 25 names will be returned. re-turned.
