Show BANDITS BLOW' . OPEN EXPRESS CAR REDDING, Cal.. Sept. 1. Three rob bers, one a negro, held up the southbound south-bound Oregon express on the Southern Pacific railroad, a mile and a half north of Lamerne, forty miles north of Redding at 9 o'clock tonight They blew both safes in the express car, rifled them and escaped, accompanied by two other robbers who had been riding on the roof of the car. No ono was hurt Tho value of the robbers' booty has not been learned. The jobbery job-bery was reported at Delta, Cal , by Conductor Dickey, within fifteen minutes min-utes after It occurred. A special train immediately was prepared at Dunsmulr, ' Cal , and left bearing a posse Sheriff Montgomery of Tehama Te-hama county, also was notified and organized or-ganized a posse A third posBe was organized at Redding.. A battle Is expected with tne bandits, who fled to tho forests west of the Southern Pacific right of way. The robbers boarded the train as it stood on a siding sid-ing at Gibson, near Lamerne. When the train got under way, three of them worked their way Into the express ex-press car. holding the messengers at bay with revolvers. Only one of the bandits, a negro, was masked They blew the safes and at the sound of the explosions the train slowed down. The robbers craspe-J what they could lay hands on and jumped into the darkness, where their t?o companions joined them Tho negro Is described as being about 5 feet, C Inches tall and weighing 150 pounds. Pie wore a black slouch hat. One of the white men was slightly taller, had a sandy mustache and wore blue overalls. Tho third man was of medium height and wore a gray suit and gray slouch hat No description was obtained of the men who were outside of the car. The first special train was not due to reach tho scene of the robbery until after midnight tfhe country about Lamerne Is densely wooded, almost uninhabited and it is believed the bandits will be driven into the open for food. oo |
