Equipped with all the necessary "paraphernalia "par-aphernalia for the erection 'of a prison pris-on stockade and tho making of better bet-ter roads, fifteen convicts fiom the state penitentiary at Salt Lake City passed through this city this morning on tholr way to Wlllnrd. noar which village the first convict "goodroads" camp in Utah will be established The caravan of prisoners, consisting of seven wagons, wended Its way north on Washington avenue at about 10 o'clock The start from the state prison was made yesterday morn'n?, the convicts camping last night ahout eight miles south of Ogden. In the vl cinlty of Clearfield. The captives wore in charge of two guards. W. D Davis and Charles Davies, each armed with repeating rifles. The departure of the initial squad of prison road builders "from the penitentiary was witnessed by Governor Gover-nor William Spry and S. W. btow-art btow-art of the board of corrections. The procession was led by a large water wagon or sprinkler, drawn by four horses and driven by a man In prison pris-on costume The other wagons carried car-ried either road making machinery or parts of the camping outfit, tents, cooking utensils, toole, etc A threcacre plot of ground has been secured near Wlllard for the erection of the prison camp In the center of the camp, a stockade ten rods square will he erected The stockade will be built of poles and barbed wire It will be ten feet high with wire strung four InchOB apart. Inside this the mess tent and the sleeping tents will be pitched Each of the four corners cor-ners of the stockade will be lighted by a powerful light, making the enclos ure at all hours of the night as light as day and thereby making any effort at escapo on the part of the prisoners douby ineffectual. No visitors or citizens will be permitted per-mitted to approach nearer than twen ty feet of tho stockade without special spec-ial permission of tho guard3. Outsido of the stockado, other tents will be pitched for the accommodation of the guards The stockade will be equipped for tho care of 126 convicts These will bo divided Into squads of about ten each, each group being guarded by one armed guard When the stockade is completed more than a hundred more convicts will be sent to iW These, however, will be transported from the prison to the camp bv rail. The real work of the convicts Is expected ex-pected to begin early next week. To begin with, the otrerations will be confined to Box Elder county and there will probably be but one camp in service at a time Twelve miles of macadamized road is to be built bo tween Ogden and Brlgham City before be-fore the end of the summer alter which work will start on the road between be-tween this city and Salt Lake City The prisoners apparently are well satisfied with the prospect of working on the roads as In this work they will receive additional credit marks and their terms of imprisonment, will there by bo lessened In addition to the regular credit marks which all con vlcts recolve for pood behavior, they will receive ten days extra for every thlrtv days of faithful service on the roads oo- |
