Show Indians Stake Mud Turtles on the Edge of a Stream I Wetumka, Okla., July 13. Creek In- dians in this vicinity are resorting to H ancient tribal customs in an attempt M to obtain a rainfall. H One of their customs, which has M been widely followed in the last week, bH is to slake mud turtles on the edge of fM the streams just far enough away m fiom the water so that they cannot M leach It It is the Indian's belief fH that the turtles, despairing of their IMm attempts to reach the water, invoke IH the aid of the "Great Spirit" to send feH rain so that the stream will be raised FH and brought near them. m Since the- tin ties were first staked m out, several ruins havet fallen. The M Indians -believe their prayers a,re be- M ing answered and they are fastening 1 M up more turtles to pray for a still ' M greater rainfall. M |
