Show H FORCING DOWN GROCERY PRICES. l This paper is being congratulated on all sides for the good re- Hr suits which are beginning to be derived from the campaign against H the "Grocers' Combine." Other papers in other cities are taking up H the fight along the lines followed by this paper and the struggle for M better prices is having its effect. H By hammering away at the "Combine" we purpose to force H down the barriers which have been erected to prevent free com- Hr petition in the local grocery trade. H Already our patrons note that this paper's fight has brought H 'hem benefits. B One writes that she observes that since the Standard started its i campaign there has been a drop in. the price of a number of articles Hj1 tnd that for the first time in months prices of groceries have been Hl given publicity. Hl Another patron says she has been able to induce her grocer fl to make his prices conform with the published price lists in, the H Standard, and she thereby has made a saving of $2 on a compar- M atively small bill of groceries. m What one grocery house can do, they all should do. H There are several grocers, members of the "Grocers' Combine," M who would break away from the price boosters if they did not fear M the "Combine" boycott. There soon will be a movement started to H protect those who desire to withdraw from the "Combine " The H people, once aroused, would no more tolerate a "Grocers' Combine" M boycott against the merchant who sought to be an independent than M they would submit to any other form of outrageous conduct on the M part of those who sell the necessaries of life. M We cannot understand why good, substantial citizens and the H grocers of Ogden are all men of that stamp should allow themselves H to borrow this outlandish boycott, first employed by a grocers' M combine elsewhere, in order to prevent competition in trade. Our M candid opinion is that there is not a grocer in business in Ogden to- H day who would not prosper, by reason of the large volume of trade Hl to be obtained, if the combine, the boycott and the blacklist were H to be eliminated. As it is, "the grocers are not pleasing their cus- m tomers, there is constant complaint, the whole city is up in arms H against them and life is made miserable. Why not reverse all this H, ty doing business on a system that requires no dark-lantern meth- Hj' ds, no back room conferences and no gum-shoeing by a "committee of three?" |
