Show IS TOUCH ON OUR ROADS Beaver county, tor the past two or three years has held the record for the best dirt i-oads in the state, but with the beautiful row which is now on between the county commissioners commission-ers and the state highway commission, commis-sion, how long it can continue to hold that enviable record, is a question. J The effect on the road is already beginning to show, and if the trouble trou-ble is not settled soon ,our roads will surely suffer. It looks as if someone were doing some mighty poor polities and if the facts are given to the public right, the fault is undoubtedly with the state highway commission. Early in the year, the county commissioners com-missioners were notified that the office of-fice of state road agent, then held by James Robinson, had been abolished, and for the county commissioners to appoint somo one to take charge of the machinery and do the work. The commissioners appointed J. L. Griffiths, Griffi-ths, as county road supervisor and gave him charge of the machinery. Later the state highway commission revived the state road agent job and asked the county commissioners to reccommend some one for the place, and tft'e commissioners properly recommended rec-ommended the man who was in charge of the work, J. L. Griffiths. Evidently Griffiths was persona non grata to some one high up in the administration, so his recommend ation was turned down and the appointment ap-pointment was given to James Hute1-Ings. Hute1-Ings. Griffiths sent his time sheet up to the state highway commission, and it was turned down by that body. Now Hutchings threatens to have Griffiths arrested if he attempts to do any work on the state highways in Beaver county. Now, comes the county commissioners commission-ers with their duty to set the tax levy which they did last Monday, and they proceed to levy nothing for the state to use on roads in the county, but levy three mills for the county to use. This provides less than thirty thir-ty cents for the state road agent to use and provides $22000 to be spent by the county on roads. In the mean time the traveling public pub-lic is hoping for the best. |
