Show SS PROHIBITION LAW SEEMS EFFECTIVE THE following clippings from Utah exchanges indicate that the new prohibition law is effective and that business generally has improved since :he State went dry August 1st : For the first twenty-four days of prohibition in Park City, there was not a single case in the police court, not a sign of intoxication either on the street or elsewhere, and not a disturbance of any character to ruffle the peace and quiet of that prosperous community. Business has been better, enjoyment greater for families of former saloon . frequenters, fre-quenters, and conditions better in all walks of life. "So far," says the Park Record, "the verdict is unanimous unani-mous that prohibition is a quiet, gratifying success so far as Park is concerned. And with it all the sa- g loon men are making a good living, I and are well pleased with the changed conditions." We have had prohibition for one month, and because of the decrease in police court business and increase in-crease in home happiness, the complete com-plete annihilation of drunkenness, . and the evidences of better business, busi-ness, we unhesitatingly pronounce it a gratifying success. Ex. Wonder of wonders ! Prohibition is working. We have watched a certain Salina man for eleven years. In all that time we have never known him to keep sober one single time when he came in with his pay check. He has come in at short -intervals, invariably spent his whole pay check and all he could beg and borrow. The police court records are strewn with his name. Just shortly before the saloons closed in Gunnison he came in with - a $150 pay check. Every penny went to the saloons and bootleggers. bootleg-gers. But there is an exception. This same man has 'been, in town for a week, and he has been sober and unable to obtain his booze. And we have actually seen him buying clothing and shoes and food, for , the first time in many, many months. We do not say that all booze has disappeared, nor that all bootleggers bootleg-gers are dead. But the new'law has helped wonderfully. Salina Call. . r . |
