Show HOOVERIZE POLITICAL SNAPS AS the individual has to economize to meet wartime conditions, so local governments should retrench to meet excess of wartime taxes. The Sonoma, Cal., Index-Tribune makes the very sensible suggestion when it asks, "Why not Hooverize on Political Snaps?" It says many political jop holders and commissions use press camouflage to show that they are rendering wonder- . ful services to earn fat salaries. It shows how big-hearted citizens who were anxious for the betterment of all things human have been worked by crafty machine politicians. They loaded load-ed the old ship of state to the gunwales with officials and soft berths born of political greed to be paid out of taxpayers' taxpay-ers' pockets. Thus a lot of excess political polit-ical baggage was vamped on the people who are now going to unload senseless snaps and experimentive functions. "Let us cut away all pretext, all hollow hol-low political timber, dismantle its connection con-nection with the state treasury, and save the people's hard-earned money. In no better way can we relieve the financial stress of the war's necessities than by obliterating the unnecessary in state affairs. The man of the hour in the business of the state will be the man who has the initiative and the courage to do this realty great work. We predict that he will be a man of big business, not a lawyer, not a poseur trying try-ing to make a millennium dawn in a day, but a man sound in his business methods, tolerant and just." |
