Show u LAST GERMAN HOPE GONE THE safe passage of the American: fleet of transports seems to predicate predi-cate the failure of the Hindenburg-Lu-dendorf submarine campaign of last resort. It is conclusive evidence of the . ability of a destroyer squadron to afford af-ford absolute protection to a carrier fleet- The circumstances are worth consideration. con-sideration. While figures are not given out, the American fleet must have .been imposing impos-ing in numbers. It was known to the German naval authorities just -when it-sailed it-sailed and it may be assumed that elaborate elab-orate preparations were made for its destruction. German submarines, as--sumedly the most effective in the service, ser-vice, made carefully planned attacks,, but the vigilance of the destroyer convoy con-voy rendered the attack futile. It may be taken for granted that with the knowledge of the coming of the American Am-erican force and of its effect upon the fortunes of war, Germany went to the extreme in her effort to destroy the expedition ex-pedition and failed. If this has any meaning it is that submarines sub-marines are ineffective as against destroyer de-stroyer convoys. It means that if it should become necessary food carriers may be grouped as were these transports trans-ports and convoyed in safety to European Euro-pean ports. The German dream of conquest con-quest through submarine terrorization is fading away, but if it should be revived re-vived through results, we have just had an object lesson of successful countering- In view of this result, it is easy to understand un-derstand why the German authorities have prohibited the announcement in Germany of the arrival of the American Ameri-can force. It would be tantamount to the announcement of the failure of the I j submarining to which Germany pin- 8 I ned its last desperate hope. Hemet 8 I (Cal.) News. 8 1 o i i |
