Show Detroit's Names According to Farmer's History of Detroit, the early French colonists applied the name Detroit to the settlements set-tlements on both sides of the river, calling one North Detroit and the other South Detroit. It has had at least five other names, including yondotiga, meaning "great village"; vil-lage"; Waweatunog, "crooked way"; Teuchsa Grondie, referring to the bend in the river; Karontaen, "coast of the straits," and Fort Pontchartrain. The name is the French word for "strait" and refers re-fers to the city's location on the strait between the lakes. |
