Show SITUATION as seen at the . jees Union ftock l'ord Los Angeles Union Stock Varus, April 24 The general livestock j situation during the past week failed to show much change compared com-pared with that noted a week before. be-fore. Weather over California and j other coastal states continued unseasonably un-seasonably cool with only a few scattered rains, mostly light, in the Los Angeles area. Grass made j little growth, except in a few especially favored districts and over the northern half of California Califor-nia grazfing conditions are considerably con-siderably poorer than usual at this j season. On April 1 the govern-jinent govern-jinent reported range feed concli-jtions concli-jtions in 17 western states as 20 r ! below a year ago and 1 lower jthan the 20 year average. I In California the January 1 re-port re-port on barley showed a condition of 7S9r for the new crop, compared compar-ed with 88 on the corresponding date a year ago. Old stocks of feeding grain and hay are report-led report-led light throughout the west, j Cattle and sheep men are facing a difficult situation and will, doubtless have to move a considerable con-siderable portion of their livestock soon in poor to half-fat flesh. Efforts to secure the removal of high ration point values on meats to stimulate consumption have met with some success in the case of pork and lamb but beef has not fared so well. Point values have been dropped in the case of certain lamb cuts and in other cuts the point values havj; been reduced substantially. The OP A has also lowered point values on most pork items but demands de-mands from many quarters for a lowering of points on beef or elimination of point values entirely en-tirely have met with little or no response. Ropjnts of cattle the past week at the Los Angeles Union .Stock yards were lighter than the previous pre-vious week but at 12 markets the j movement was about the same as the prereding week. Demand was not of uniform character and the market, in general, carried a j slow, weak tone. Best fed steers held up well but others showe1 a weak to lower tendency, with common nd low grade cows dragging at the lowest price levels in many months. In contrast, one load of choice 1191 pound beevjs sold early last week at $17.25. a new high point for the year at the iLos Angeles market. A noticeable feature of the last week's market picture was the heavy movement of calves, receipts being the largest larg-est of the year. All calf prices sagged sharply, with common calves meeting a very narrow out-jlet, out-jlet, even at materially reduced lvalues. Stocker and feeder outg was also light, du to adverse range and feed factors. Hog supplies fell of somewhat but only good and choice grades under 250 pounds maintained a steady position and these were at the support or floor level, $14.75 on the Los Angeles market. Other weights and classes were tardy sellers at uneven declines. IFat lamlbs worked 25c to 50c lower under moderately increased supplies, made up largely of common com-mon to low good descriptions. I Best lambs offered sold at $15, 'sorted about 25. Strictly choice i spring lambs, however, were nomi- nally quoted above this basis. |
