Show NAUTICAL NOVELTIES; The Paravane is a device invented by Commander Burney of the British j navy, towed under water from the forefoot of the ship in the samej manner that a kite is flown in the ! wind. Its tail has rudders, actuat-j ed by water pressure, to keep it j towing at the correct depth. From I the forefoot the tow wire sweeps! back in a long graceful curve ending,; where it is attached to the Parvene,; at a set of chrome nickel steel jaws, j The cables of anchored mines encountered en-countered are deflected by sliding along the curve of the tow wire into these jaws, and there cut, so that the mine rises to the surface clear of the ship. Paravanes are used by ships entering or clearing- harbors where the enemy may have laid mines. ' ' |
