Stephen Decatur, navel hero of the war of 1812, was killed in a duel in 1820, by another naval officer, over whose court martial Decatur had presided. Midshipman Francis Key, son of the author of the Star Spangled Span-gled Banner, was killed in a duel by Midshipman Sherboume, because they differed as to the relative speed of two steamboats. The S. S. Manhattan is the largest larg-est merchant vessel ever built in the United States. She is commanded by Captain George Fried of the naval reserve, and is of 30,000 gross tons with a speed of 22 knots. |
