Show JEFFERSON ATTENDS CIVIC CLUBS MEET FOR BEAVER COUNTY A definite pogram for the benefit of the southern part of the. state was established at the monthly meeting of the Associated Civic Clubs of Southern Utah held Saturday and Sunday at Mt. Pleasant, Santa Fe County, and attended by George Jefferson Jef-ferson of Milford, vice president of the organization and representative from Beaver County. The meeting opened with a banquet at 7 o'clock sponsored by the Lions Club of Santa Fe County and attended attend-ed by about 150 friends of the organization organ-ization including the twelve directors of the Associated Civic Clubs, representing repre-senting the twelve counties of Southern South-ern Utah, and Chief Engineer Kerr of Salt Lake, representing the state road commission. Freight Rates Discussed Freight rates charged by the D and R railroad in hauling gasoline into southern Utah was the first matter of consideration brought before the meeting and it was reported by the committee in charge that the railroad company would agree to make satisfactory satis-factory rates. Discussion on the connecting link of the state highway system between Mt. Pleasant and Thistle bought to light that Sante Fe county was divided divid-ed on the subject so the matter was dropped by the oganization until the county could settle its differences. The educators of Santa Fe county appeared before the meeting and urged urg-ed the co-operation of the association for the establishing of junior colleges in the state. This matter was turned over to the legislative committee of the club of which Mr. Jefferson is chairman and the matter will be brought up for further discussion at the next meeting of the organization. Budget Established Possibly the most impotant work of the meeting was accomplished when the members recommended Sunday morning at eight o'clock and discussed the advertising plans of the club, establishing es-tablishing a budget of $10,000 for the support of two advertising agencies in Salt Lake city for the purpose of exploiting the scenic and commercial resources of Southern Utah. At three o'clock Sunday afternoon the meeting adjourned to meet at St. George on Saturday, January 10 where further progress will be made in the work of promoting activities to benefit Southern Utah. Enthusiasm Arroused The meeting at Mt. Pleasant aroused arous-ed considerable enthusiasm for the organization because it was the first at which definite business was accomplished accom-plished and the members showed that the association can and will be a power pow-er in the state. Its purpose is to foster, fos-ter, encourage and promote the growth and development of Southern Utah and to exploit its resources. Its organization fills a heed long felt in this section of the state. |
