Show Colton-Oddie Bill I To Benefit West At last the Colton-Oddie public domain bill Is a law. President Hoover having signed it Tuesday. It commits the federal government to the policy of building and maintaining maintain-ing highways across the public domain, do-main, where such highways from parts of federal aid systems. It recognizes re-cognizes completely a principal which heretofore has only partial recognition that the public land states are put to considerable expense ex-pense constructing roads across lands owned by the federal government, govern-ment, and which contribute little or no share to the expenses of government, govern-ment, including those of road construction con-struction and maintenance. This bill does not attempt to limit lim-it the amount that may be appropriated appro-priated for public domain highways, and is permanent in its operation, but before any funds are available, congress must pass a supplementary bill authorizing the amount to be appropriated for the first year of operation. Such a bill will not be introduced at this session for two reasons; it could not be passed in the few remaining days of the session, ses-sion, if introduced and furthermore, it is the wish of the president that the initial appropriation be delayed until next session, because appropriations appro-priations this session have exceeded the budget. o |
