Show Odd Freak of Wheels A stuck throttle on the locomotive of a Pennsylvania railroad passenger locomotive near Hamburg, Pa., caused oue of the most freakish accidents in the history of the railroad. The train was traveling nearly sixty miles an hour when the engineer discovered that he could neither take off, nor put on steam. The train was rapidly approaching ap-proaching a station so he turned on the air and brought the train to a stop with the brakes. But the wheels of the locomotive continued to revolve at a high speed, wearing grooves in the rails and creating a terrific noise. The engine was stopped only after water had been poured on the fire to reduce the steam pressure. It required more than an hour to bring the wheels to a halt. |
