Show Handkerchief's History In its earlier form the handkerchief was merely a cloth or towel with i which to wipe the face or the hand. ( The modern name Is derived from the "coverehief," or veil, formerly used I by women for covering the head. In ' the Sixteenth century this article , formed a part of woman's headdress, 1 and the word kerchief (corrupted from coverehief) lost Its original meaning but retained its name as a cloth, and the term "handkerchief was generally adopted. Its prefix, ' "pocket," came from the French, "mouchoir de poche," which, trans- j lated Idiomatically, means pocket- handkerchief. I |
