Show The Oldest Printing Press. Typography, or the art of printing from movable type, was Invented In Kurope about the middle of the fifteenth fif-teenth century. Ileyond this fact, the history of this far-reaching industry Is very uncertain. It is generally considered con-sidered that cut wooden type was first used, then cut leaden type, and that afterward cast type was employed. William Caxton, In H67. waa thu first to practice printing from movable type In Fngland. The oldest type of printing press which, by this way, Is now In the South Kensington museum, London. Is the actual marhlne with which Iknjnmin Franklin worked In the year 1730. It Is constructed of hard wood, mortised together; It carries car-ries two horizontal rails, upon which nlldes a carrlnge supporting the frame of composed type, called the form. Tbe type was inked by two largi pads, or balls, with ink on their surfaces, ' the riititpbit'iiin of the Ink being per-turmid per-turmid by working the pat's together and then applying them to the forms. |
