Show Mesa Names Tolman As New Mentor Jay Tolman, ex-Utah Aggie football foot-ball captain and ace fullback, Monday Mon-day was named athletic director at the Mesa Junior college at Grand Junction Colo., to succeed Pete Carlson. Carlson left Mesa to join the University of Utah athletic ath-letic staff. Tolman, who was hailed recently by Dick Romney as being the greatest fullback ever to play at the U S A C, returned home from the service recently. He was a major in the army and served in Germany. He graduated from U S A C in 1934 and was saptain of the Farmers Far-mers in 1933. He coached at Delta high after leaving the Logan school and gave Delta its first football foot-ball tittle in 1938. In fact it was the first time a team from the southern part of the state had ever won a grid title. He introduced six-man football in Utah when he went to Dixie high in 1939. He coached the Dixie Junior college team to its first grid title in 1940. After his army career Jay returned to Dixie last fall. The new Mesa mentor is enthusiastic enthus-iastic over his new post. He reports that a tough 10-game football schedule has been lined up for the coming fall including games with Salinas and Sacramento Junior colleges col-leges of California, as well as Weber, We-ber, Pueblo, Trinidad, Carbon, BAC and Dixie. Tolman will coach all sports. An assistant in football likely will be named in the near future. The new mentor has a fine background in all sports as both coach and player. play-er.
