Show OUST PEACE DELEGATES Springfield, 111., Sept. 1. Governor Govern-or Frank O. Lowden will prevent tho proposed meeting of tho Peoplo's Council of Pcaco and Domocracy this afternoon In Chicago. Ho Issued a statement to this effect at noon. Tho statomont declares tho mooting to bo unlawful and would tend to produce rioting and disorder. Tho action of tho governor Is taken tak-en at tho urgent request of tho Illinois Illin-ois Council of National Defense, which nppealed to the chief executivo against tho meeting. Governor Lowden hod decided to prohibit tho gathering boforo ho knew that tho delegates of tho peaco council had already gouo into session In Chicago. If necessary, tho governor said, tho militia will bo used to prevent tho meeting. Tho statement was issuod after tho governor had spent tho morning In investigating tho activities activi-ties of tho organization and had conferred con-ferred with Adjutant General Frank S. Dickson. Ha ordored tho adjutant adju-tant general to tako such steps as ho deemed advisable in stopping tho meeting. Tho statement Issued by tho governor gov-ernor follows: "Tho governor Is charged with tho responsibility of preserving peaco in tho state. If, in his Judgment, disorder dis-order and riot aro likely to result from this so-called peaco meeting, it Is his duty, and ho has tho power, to prevent tho mooting. His understanding understand-ing Is that whllo tho meeting purports pur-ports to bo In tho Interests of peace-it peace-it Is really Intended to obstruct the government In tho prosecution of tho war In which wo aro now engaged and rioting In Illinois. Ho will not, and Is calculated to produce disorder therefore, permit this meeting to bo hold in Illinois." |
