A daring dar-ing attack by a Garmnn subniarlna on a big British freighter, convoyed by a destroyer, tho U-boat coming so jeloso to fire a torpedo that gunu could not bo trained on her, was ro- who arrived today on the ship. The attack occurred about 500 miles off tho coast of Ireland, when the freighter was bound for the United States. The first Indication of an enemy's presence was the sudden swerving of the destroyer across the bow of the merchantman. Tho next moment a torpedo flashed straight at her bow, a quick twist of the steering wheel turning the vessel sufficiently suf-ficiently to dodge the missile. Tho gun crow stood ready to flro at the first ripple, but to their amazement amaze-ment tho U-boat emerged altnost alongside tho Bhlp, so close that the freighter's guns could not be depressed de-pressed enough to cover her. The destroyer was unable to fire becauso tho freighter screenod the submarine, which disappeared beneath tho water without attempting to fire a shot. |
