Popo Bene- I diet will launch formal "feelers" to I further the ends of peace, according M to confidential advices received at diplomatic quarters today. The first effort will be made along 4lJ the following lines, according to these advices: Restoration of Belgium. Repayment for wrong suffered. Permission to have a German gar rlson remain at Antwerp. Granting autonomy to Lorraine, leaving the coal enriched Alsace in German hands. Making Trieste port outside Italian jurisdiction. Leaving the Balkan question to the peace conference, but insisting that Bosnia ami Herzegovina remain Austrian Aus-trian territory. The news precipitated wide discussion discus-sion among tho diplomatic corps. It Is believed the popo either will reply directly to President Wilson, making further suggestions, baBed on an understanding un-derstanding that there will be prompt and wide democratization within tho I Teuton empires or will transmit n formal note to this government through the papal delegation here. According to the first confidential message received here on the subject, sub-ject, it would appear the pope will not go Into the question of restoration restora-tion and restitution of Rumania, Serbia and Montenegro, believing them to come under the general peace negotiations bearing on the Balkans.
