Show ALLY CRAFT OFF IRELAND STRUCK BY TORPEDO 1 New York. July 18. Tho British steamship Cranmore. previously reported re-ported sunk by a German (U-boat, was saved from destruction by an American destroyer which was convoying con-voying her through the danger zone, nccording to members of her crew, who arrived here today from England on an American ship. Tho Cranmore was attacked, they said, July 7 about 180 miles west of Ireland, tlvo ot her plates being stove In by a torpedo. Tho U-boat that It fired did not appear and did not press tho attack owing to the presence pres-ence ot the American warship. Under protection of the destroyer the vessel was able to proceed to an Irish port under her own steam. Torpedo Misses U. S. Liner by 80 Yards. An Atlantic Port, July 1,8. A torpedo tor-pedo missed a big American liner by thirty yards when it was attacked by a submarine July 11, according to Colonel A. C. Greame Harrison, a British army officer, who arrived on tho steamer today. Colonel Harrison said none ot the passengers saw the submarine, but the naval gun crow made ready for action. No shots were fired. On July 13, Colonel Harrison declared, de-clared, sixty-two shots were fired by tho gun crew nt which appeared to bo a periscope, sighted 2000 yards distant In mid-Atlantic. Closer investigation in-vestigation revealed the supposed periscope as a buoy which had broken from Its moorings. The steamer was delayed moro than sixty hours In leaving England by reports ot unusual submarine activity. ac-tivity. oo |
