PEPYS AT AN EXECUTION. V Punishment of Malefactor In England In Year 1663. In the early days of public executions. execu-tions. It was no uncommon thing for the condemned man to be hanged on the scene of the crime, or even at hln home. Mr Pepys attended such a spectacle on Jan. 21, 1663, for we read the following entry In his dlaiy: "t'p. and nrter sending my wife to my Aunt Wright's to get a place to Bee Turner hanged, I to the 'Change, and. seeing people flock In the city, I Inquired and found that Turner was not yet hanged; so I went among them to Lendenhall street, at the end of Lyme street, near where the robbery rob-bery was done, and to St. Mary Axe, wheie he lived. And there I got, for a shilling, to stnnd upon the wheel of a cart, In great pain, above an hour before be-fore tho execution was done, he delaying delay-ing tho time by long discourses nnd pra)ers, one after another, In hopes of a reprieve; but none came, and at last was flung off the ladder In his cloak. A comely looking man he was, nnd kept his countenance to the end. I was sorry to see him. It was believed believ-ed there were at least 12 or H.000 people peo-ple In the street." |
