Show The Tariff. One of the principal planks of the New York platform pertains to the Tariff. It is couched in modern terms, as becomes a paity which twelve years ago obtained power of the American people by me'ins of virulent attacks on the Protective system and of loud and contldent pledges of procuring the "markets of the world" foi the people of the t'nlted States tluough the "Tariff for rcNcnuc only" that it would establish, but which enacted instead the Wilson bill, that fulfilled no Democratic pio.nisc whateer, and was a Protective monstrosity without supplying the revenue necessary to run the Government. Naturally enough, the Democrats of New York put on no special airs in their Tariff plank, which demands: Reasonable revision of the Tariff; needless duties upon Imported raw-materials raw-materials weigh heavily on the manufacturer, manu-facturer, are a menace to the American Ameri-can wage earner, and by Increasing the cost of production shut out our 1 products from the foreign markets. j It will be noticed that the New J York Democrats practically confess I the error of the economic principles which their party has professed for seventy ears. There is in this plank no Intimation that "Protection Is robbery," or even that "Tariff for revenue only" is the proper policy for the I'nltcd States. There is here not even a faint suggestion of attack on the Protective system. The Democrats Demo-crats of New York know that their party could not carry ten States on an anti-Protective policy. It will be noticed, however, that they profess a profound regard for the Interests of the manufacturer and the laboring man, who will smile sardonically as they think of Democratic rule In 181)3-1-Mi. Speaking of our products being "shut out fiom foreign markets" mar-kets" will appear sad stuff to those who know that American exports in-cieasc in-cieasc constantly, breaking all the recoids of expoitatlon, not only In the annals of our commerce, but in the history of the nations of the woild. The Demociatlc national Tariff plank will not differ much from that of New York; but what Democrat Is so sanguine as to believe that such a declaration will win votes for a party which icpudlatcd party pledges and botched Tariff legislation so recently as 16!)). |
