In China, about twelve miles from the village of Lion Chek, there is a mountain of alum, which, In addition to being a natural curiosity, Is a source of wealth for the inhabitants of the country, who dig from It yearly tona of alum. Tho mountain Is not less than ten miles in circumference at Its base and has a height of nearly .000 feot, Tho alum is obtained by quarrying largo blocks of stone, which are first heated In great furnaces and then In rats filled with boiling water.
