Show MORE ABOUT APPLES. Professors Ball, Northrup, Titus and other experts In horticulture at the A. C. of U. arc authority far frequent statements to the effect that Cache Valley can produce as finely flavored and as beautifully colored apples as can bo grown any placo on the globe. They also Insist that Cache Valley orchards properly tended will produce In quantity as wefl aJ quality, and that with caro in marketing Cache Valley apples will bring the prices paid for Washington, Oregon and Colorado Col-orado apples. If further assurance is needed, the result of apple growing in tho Bear River Valley, Just over the range, may be considered, for conditions condi-tions theru are the same as our own. From the Tremont Times of recent date w.o take the following extracts: 'Harry Seeger, of Elwood, has an orchard of about :too trees on twoacres of land'. They aro mostly Ben Davis, Spltsenborgs and Golden Russets with a few Baldwins. From this little orchard or-chard Mr. Seeger realized more than $300 an acre, or fully $."j0O uu acre abovo every expense. Stacy & Sons, of Minneapolis, bought the whole lot. This orchardls only ten years old. "Dr. Roche, of Corlnne, has an apple orchard of about twelve acres near Corlnne that was set out about ten years ago. They are mostly Ben Davlf. Tho fruit from this orchard was sold this fall to parties who shipped it to Denver and Grand Junction, Colorado. There wcro something ov'e 8,000 boxes or eleven carloads of salablo apples for which the doctor received $1.40 a box, or nearly $12,000. Ho has kept an accurate ac-curate account and sajs the orchard has netted him over $550 an acre. "Some ten years ago a Mr. Cleveland purchased a small tract of land not far from Corlnne. Five acrci were set out In trees, and theso trees are now In full bearing. During the' present year a jlold of 1,200 boxes of apples per acie was obtained, theso apples selling at 75 cents a-box on the tree. From tho live acres of apples Mr. Cleveland has made a clear profit of $4,500. "Tho gross returns from tho large apple orchard near Corlnne, purchased less than two years ago by Adney & Co., Is reported to be nearly equal to the price paid at the timeot their purchase. This orchard was formerly owned by non-residents, who suffered loss from 'criminal nepject' of this valuable property." Though Cache has few commercial orchards bearing at. this time, l will bo but a short time before there will be 300 or 400 acres of bearing apple trees. Fruit grown in small orchards has proved to be of glorious color and splendid size, -and it is pretty certain that Bear River Valley will have to get a hustle on to keep up with tho procession once wo strike our gait. |
