Show Tho present cost of paper and the rapidly diminishing supply of wood from which paper is made is surely becoming a menace. It Is estimated that at the present raid of consump tlon all the wood of the United States will be consumed In thirty years, and long before that tlmo white paper will reach a price that will place Its use beyond any but the raultl-mllllonaire combinations. Already extensive experiments ex-periments to And a substitute for wood as a body for paper are being made and It Is hoped that some plant or fibre may be discovered that will answer tho purpose. The price of ordinary or-dinary newspaper has doubled In tho past two ears and the promise is that the next twoyearswlll bring a heavier increase, The larger papers of the city are considering .tho advisability of cutting out the magazine and comic sections of their publications. The prospect Is that In a few years the "country weekly" will be llttlo larger than a postage stamp or else relegated to that sleep from which there Is no waking. |
