Show Sam Carpenter recounts historical events on ninetieth birthday business in Salt Lake City and the most familiar to residents of this area is Kent, who resides in Kanab where he is a car salesman. Don, the youngest son lived for a time in Cedar City but moved to Lander, Wyo. and is affiliated with U. S. Steel operations there. His (laughter, Carman, married Jay Fisher. He served in the U. S. Air Force for 23 years and they are now retired and living in Kaysville. Tuesday, Feb. 2r was a red letter day in the life of Sam Carpenter of Cedar City as he celebrated his 00th birthday. "I'ncle Sam" as he is af-lectionally af-lectionally known by his family is a long time resident of Cedar City having moved here in and for the exception of one year spent in northern I'tah has made this his home. He has had a variety of experiences ex-periences throughout his life, but principally he has been engaged in farming and the livestock industry. Additionally he worked in the kitchen at Mercury, Nevada for three years, managed for a short time the "Twin Pines" hotel in Cedar City. The Twin Pines was located at the corner of Main and Center Street where J. C. Penney 's is now located. He managed the facility in 1923 w hen the Railroad came to Cedar City. ins experience at ftlercury and the hotel, made him familiar with the "kitchen" and during the summer months he spends a good deal of his time canning fresh fruits and vegetables. "1 also helped my mother with canning when I was a small boy," he states. He is also well known for his gardening efforts - a pasttime that he pursues just to "give away." Sam has a rich history that goes back to Feb. 25, 1H85 when he was the first white child to be born at Thatcher, Ariz. His parents had been called by the LDS Church to settle in that community as part of the mormon mor-mon colonization program. Sam married Margaret Cutler of Kanab and she passed away in 1959 from a fall on the steps of the Cedar City post office. He has five children, four sons and one daughter. The eldest son, Scott, is a manager of a manufacturing firm in North Carolina. Paul, the second son is in the real estate It's best to judge your friends by what they do rather than by what they say.
