The Cedar City Animal Shelter, located at 1150 West 1200 North, holds animals for five days before putting them up for sale to the public. Jim Gollehon said that they try to keep the animals for as long as there is enough space for them, before they are destroyed. Any person who takes an animal to the shelter is required by law to sign a euthanasia record which gives the shelter the right to do whatever they have to with the animal and to destroy it if necessary. Presently there is only one full time paid employee of the shelter. He is Jim Broadwell and was hired by the city to act as Supervisor of Animal Control. Jim Gollehon is unpaid but is allowed to live rent free in a small trailer on the shelter grounds in exchange for tending the animals when Broadwell can't be there and for generally keeping an eye on the place. By Steve Lutz So that cuddly puppy of yours has grown large enough to jump the back fence and seek the excitement of the outside world. He has been gone for two days and understandably enough you are worried about the delinquent mutt. Well if you are like several hundred other animal owners in the Cedar area you might well find your pet at the local animal shelter. According to Jim Gollehon, 24 year old veterinary student at SUSC and part time helper at the animal shelter, over 500 animals have passed through the Cedar City facility since it opened in May. Some have been returned to their owners, some have found new homes, but the rest unfortunately un-fortunately had to be destroyed. There are various ways to get rid of unwanted animals according ac-cording to the American Humane Society. Some places use poison gases. Some just shoot the animals. One method is to back a truck up to an airtight box full of animals. Then connect a hose from the exhaust pipe of the truck to the box and start the engine. Although this method is effective and inexpensive it is an inhumane practice. It can be quite painful for the animals because they remain conscious for some time and the hot exhaust gases burn their lungs. Another method is a decompression decom-pression chamber in which the animals are placed and then all the air is sucked out by means of a high powered vacuum pump. The Cedar City shelter destroys animals by injecting them with a poison that Gollehon said kills them within a minute. According to the ASPCA, 10,000 new pets are born each hour in America, adding to approximate total of 90,000.000. Fifty percent of these are strays. In 1973 the ASPCA of New York City destroyed nearly 200.000 animals. This figure does not include those killed by other organizations, private veterinary clinics or accidents.
