Cedar loses in Division opener Cedar City Big League team suffered a sound trounching at the hands of Adams County of Colorado in the opening round of the Division tournament being held at Littleton, just outside Denver. Adams County pounded the Cedar team for 15 hits, including three home runs to post a 13-1 victory Tuesday evening. Cedar City managed only five hits in the contest, three of those by Lee Holmes. Only extra base hit for the Cedar Big Leaguers was a double by Holmes. The single run for Cedar came in the second inning when Robert Piatt walked, moved to third on a single by Holmes and scored on a fielders choice by Robert Morris. Shirts, who had pitched 19 innings last week, including 12 on Saturday, went five and a third innings and appeared to show signs of the strain in the contest. Usually a pitcher that is well ahead of his batters he took eight batters to full count while on the mound. Steve Stoker came in in relief in the bottom of the sixth. He faced four batters, gave up one hit and one run before retiring the final batter for Adams County. The Cedar team w as in the ball game until the fifth inning. Adams County pushed in two runs in the first inning on three hits and an error. A home run by the pitcher Mike Mock, one of two he belted in the game, gave Adams County a 3-1 lead. Adams County was shut out in the third and fourth, but in the fifth a walk and a home run by Don Swanberg moved the score to 5-1, still within reach. The sixth frame, however, was disasterous. Adams County belted six hits, including Mock's second homer, and scored eight runs to put the contest out of reach. In the first game of the Divisional tournament Mesa, Ariz, defeated Scottsdale, Ariz, by a score of 8-1. In the double elimination tournament Cedar was pitted against Scottsdale Wednesday night and Mesa took on AdamsCounty. The loser of the Cedar-Scottsdale Cedar-Scottsdale contest will be eliminated while the winner w ill meet the loser of the Mesa-Adams Mesa-Adams County game Thursday. |
