Show Lighting, a technical plus for Shakespearean Festival r r - . " p i i s ... .. ..m v. . '' ' now." (This season's lighting operators must run a "blind" show coordinated only through vocal cueing via the stage manager). Mr. Harvey expresses satisfaction in being able to achieve an artistically sound product under the physical limitations imposed with the temporary lighting conditions, hut looks forward to working with adequate dimming capacity and instruments to meet the demands of repertory theatre on a thrust stage. Assisting Mr. Harvey are two technicians, Chip Purchase and Steven Hirsh, who are also both from California. Mary Harvey also accompanied her husband to Utah for the Shakespearean season, so that along with daughter Brneda, the family could spend the .summer together. Mary, a kindergarten teacher in Newporet Beach, is assisting in the Festival Box Office with ticket sales. CAMERON HARVEY "Usually, an audience only notices my work if its bad," laughs Cameron Harvey, Production and Lighting Coordinator Coor-dinator for the Utah Shakespearean Festival. Mr. Harvey, who is an Assistant Professor of Theatre Design at University of California Irvine, has worked with Festival lighting for the past seven years, and has helped the lighting evolve through the various temporary stages which have been necessary as the permanent building has grown. "Finally," says Mr. Harvey, "we are able to talk about 'permanent Festival lighting' as a reality. Only the roof of the Festival building remains as a major project to be completed, and after that, permanent lighting can be installed within one year after the lighting is funded. We are looking forward to that time." Mr. Harvey's plans for the finished lighting package stress flexibility, and a system that any designer could feel comfortable working with. He plans a lighting system that would adequately support three repertory theatre shows. The lighting package needs to achieve architectural integration with the Tudor Elizabethan design of the building, and must be unobtrusive while also being functional and flexible. A control room will be installed above the balcony seating section, matching mat-ching the cupola which arises above the stage area. "I would like to stay with the Festival long enough to see this permanent lighting project through to competion, and then work with it at least one year," continues Mr. Harvey. "It will be such an improvement over the temporary clutter of cords and switches and circuitry we have worked with so far. We will enjoy the time when the lighting controls will not be located in a separate building as they are |
