Offensively the entire team came through. Extra base hits included a triple by Piatt and a double by Robert Morris. Cedar 13, Clearfield 2: Again it was Shirts and the Cedar bats,' with outstanding relief by Steve Hafen. Extra base hits for Cedar included two triples by Rick Rollo, a triple by Meyers, and doubles by Hunter, Jensen and Shirts. Piatt had a fantastic tournament tour-nament at the plate. He came to bat officially 16 times in the tournament, collected 12 hits including eight singles a double and three triples and walked twice. He never struck out during the five games of play. Next top hitter was Meyers with 9 hits in 17 trips for a .529 average. He had three triples. Schoppmann hit 9 foir 20 for a .450 average and Lee Holmes had five hits in 14 trips for a .357 average. Others .over 300 were Howard Reynolds and Rick Rollo with 333 averages and Steve Hafen at 500 with one hit in two official trips. r"'"-- Cedar City Big League baseball team, a division of Little League for young men 16 through 18 years of age, captured the Utah-Nevada Sectional tournament tour-nament this past weekend in Las Vegas, Nev. The Cedar City crew, led by Robert Shirts on the mound with three tournament victories and Bob Piatt at the plate with an outstanding .750 five game batting average, won the tournament tour-nament the hard way coming back from a 2-1 loss at the hands of Clearfield to capture the double-elimination tournament honors. It was Clearfield, in the end, however, who suffered the vengance of the Cedar City team Saturday night as Cedar City scored convincing 8-0 and 13-2 victories over the northern Utah Club. The real character of the Cedar City team came through after they had lost to Clearfield in a tough 2-0 battle. Cedar City and Las Vegas were pitted in the opening round contest and Cedar City best the Las Vegas team in a tight 4-3 battle. That was Thursday evening. Friday Cedar lost to Clearfield 2-0 and were forced into a double header battle against Las Vegas who had set in the wings waiting for the outcome of the Cedar-Clearfield Cedar-Clearfield battle. Las Vegas was ready to pounce and pounce they did, pushing in one run in the first, three in the second, three in the third and four in the top of the fourth to lead by a score of 11-1. At that point Cedar City did what seemed to be impossible, they started a rally and before the fourth frame was over Cedar had pushed in nine runs and were trailing 11-10. That score held through the fifth, sixth and into the bottom of the seventh and final inning. At that point Ray Meyers belted a single and moved to third on a double by Bob Piatt. Robert Morris flew out to left field and Meyers came in to knot the score on a sacrifice fly by Brad Hunter. On the sacrifice Piatt moved to third and the game was knotted with two away. Lee Holmes was the next batter and after drawing two strikes belted a high bouncer over the third baseman to drive in Piatt for the game winning victory. It was the second loss lor Las Vegas and eliminated the host club from the three-team tournament. tour-nament. Saturday night the Cedar City crew, coached by Don Heap and John Graff were still behind the eight ball going against undefeated un-defeated Clearfield with a loss on their hands. But the Cedar bats, behind the superb pitching of Robert Shirts completely demolished the Division II champions from Utah in both ends of a double header to give Cedar the championship. Shirts, who pitched a five hitter to defeat Las Vegas in the opening game scattered five hits against Clearfield, as Cedar Big Leaguers belted out 14 hits to score a 8-0 shutout victory. The win forced the two clubs into a double-header to give Cedar the championship. Shirts continued on the mound for five innings of the second game and left with a 13-2 lead. Steve Hafen came on in relief, gave up only one hit and post three strikeouts to finish out the game and send the Cedar crew to Littleton, a suburb of Denver, Colo, for the Division level of tournament competition. The crew left Monday after noon for the tournament which opened Tuesday evening. Statistically here are some of the highlights of the Sectional tournament at Vegas: Cedar 4, Las Vegas 3: Shirts hurled a five hitter, but four errors by the Cedar crew were costly. Cedar scored first pushing in two runs in the third frame. Meyers tripled, scored on a sacrifice fly by Piatt. Steve Jenson got hit by a pitched ball and came on to score on an error. In the fifth Piatt tripled and scored on an error by the pitcher. Vegas meanwhile pushed in a tally in the fifth, one in the sixth and in the top of the seventh belted a pair of hits to push in the game tieing run knotting the score at3-all. In the bottom of the seventh with one away Robert Morris singled, stole second base, moved to third on a single by Steve Hafen and scored on a single by Piatt. - Clearfield 2, Cedar 1: Lee Holmes went the distance and suffered the loss in this contest. He gave up only six hits, but Cedar was limited to five. Clearfield belted three hits to score in the first inning. In the third Kevin Schoppmann singled, moved to second on an error and scored on a single by Piatt to tie the score. In the bottom of the sixth a Clearfield batter was hit by a pitch. He stole second base, moved to third on a wild pitch and came on to score the game winning run on a passed ball. Cedar 12, Vegas 11 : This was a total team' victory and was the game that showed the real determination and staying power of Cedar City. Vegas loaded the bases in the second and Lea'vitt of Vegas belted an in the park home run. Alertly Cedar appeared ap-peared on second and the batter was ruled out for missing the base, it took away one run, but they pushed in runs in the third and fourth to take the big 11-1 lead. One of the real heros of this game was Russ Mortensen of Parowan. He came in in relief in the fourth inning to end the Las Vegas scoring and he held Vegas scoreless through the fifth, sixth and seventh innings without giving up another hit. The bottom of the fourth was the big one for Cedar as they pushed in nine runs on just four hits taking advantage of numerous walks. Four of the runs were scored with two away. Still trailing into the bottom of the seventh Cedar pitched up three hits to score the tieing and winning run to advance to the finals. Cedar 8, Clearfield 0: Shirts scattered five hits in the contest. THE VICTORS.
