Show Respirtory self-care classes offered "Normally, lungs work automatically auto-matically and quietly, but when they are damaged, each breath can be a chore," say Lyman F. Smart, president of the Utah Lung Association. "There is no cure for emphysema emphy-sema or other diseases like it, but there is much the patient can dj to help himself overcome the physical inactivity caused by shortenesg of breath and chronic cough." Mr. Smart says that sometimes some-times physicians don't have time to give or reinforce instructions in-structions that can help their patients. "The Chrismas Seal Respiratory Respira-tory Disease Self-Care Classes have been established in south-wsteern south-wsteern Utah to give this spec ial attention and instruction to patients who need it," said Mr. Smart. The Self-Care Classes teach methods and techniques that Implement easier breathing, increase in-crease physical activity and prevent episodes of acute respiratory res-piratory failure. Patients will learn ways to breathe In steam to loosen the mucus in the lungs. The pursed-lip breathing breath-ing taught, will help the em-physemic em-physemic patient release more air so that more oxygen can reach his lungs and blood stream when he Inhales. The Self-Care Classes are held monthly at the Valley Medical Center In Cedar City. A total of ten hours of instruc tion will be given to patients and spouse. New classes began Monday. Others are scheduled at a later date. Mr. Smart said that local volunteers vol-unteers are distributing posters post-ers and pamphlets about the Self-Care Classes in Medical Cciters, doctors offices and at pharmacies. 'The printed material ma-terial can be identified by the familiar red double barred crofj that you see on Christmas Seals.
